DETECTIVES are hunting two local men who attacked and tried to rob a cab driver in the early hours of Saturday.
The 57-year-old taxi driver picked up the men in Swine Market in Nantwich just before 2am.
When he stopped the car in Lyceum Way in Crewe, the men grappled with the driver for his cash before making an escape.
A Police spokesman said: "They arrived in Lyceum Way at 2.10am. Then they calmly asked how much money the taxi driver had taken and demanded it.
"The rear passenger grabbed the taxi driver from behind and held him to the seat. Both passengers then punched the driver.
"The front seat passenger then tried to find cash and one of the offenders shouted for them to go and they left the car and calmly walked down a dirt track in the direction of Bradfield Road."
The taxi driver sustained minor injuries from the attack and was shaken.
Both offenders are described as white and between 20-25 years old.
One was between 5 ft 11ins and 6ft tall, of medium build, with fair hair in a crew cut style. He had a local accent and was wearing a light coloured top.
The second offender is between 5ft 9ins and 5ft 11ins, of medium build, with collar length dark hair. He also had a local accent and was wearing a knee length jacket.
Police believe that the offenders are local to the area as on the journey they mentioned a number of pubs in the vicinity.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or can help with enquiries should contact Detective David Lloyd at the Crewe Specialist Investigation Unit on 01244 613333.
