Eyesores will deter visitors

RESIDENTS in Northwich fear the ever-growing number of grot spots in the town could force tourists away.

As reported last week, concerned members of the public contacted the Guardian to complain about eyesore areas and a flurry of phone calls soon followed the article as other readers shared their worries.

Castle resident Arthur Poole, of Queensgate, said he has watched the town fall into disrepair, adding: "The burnt out Moore and Brock building is a disgrace.

"The burnt out Manweb site, by Town Bridge, is no better. Something needs to be done about these spots."

And former ICI shift manager Arthur, 63, said: "I have a horrible feeling we will become a town that looks like anywhere else with no traditional buildings left.

"This thought saddens me as I have lived here all my life.

"The main road at Castle is a nightmare, especially at the weekend, with pizza boxes and takeaway wrappers strewn in the street.

"Greenbank Station is another problem with litter everywhere. My auntie and uncle worked there until the mid 1960s and put bedding plants in and took real pride in the station so it is sad to see it now.

"Northwich is a real disgrace and visitors must think it is horrendous.

We need to address it as a community, look to the future and not destroy what we have left."

And a Witton Park resident, who did not wish to be named, said sacred land is being sacrificed. She said: "Land at the side of the railway bridge off Station Road and West View are particular grot spots and next to the Witton Church cemetery is disgraceful - there are beer cans and all sorts of rubbish dumped there."
