RECKLESS vandals have twice hurled bricks and golf balls at firefighters as they tackled rubbish blazes.
One firefighter would have ended up in hospital, say emergency crews, if his helmet had not saved him.
"His helmet has had to be replaced, it was damaged that much," said crew manager Stuart Pickering.
"He was really lucky. They would have put him in hospital if he had not been wearing his helmet."
The first incident happened in Stewards Avenue at 9.20pm, last Wednesday, followed by another attack in neighbouring Scott Avenue, at 8.15pm on Friday.
Each time, firefighters were trying to put out burning rubbish, deliberately set on fire by youths.
The police are investigating.
