'My conscience will be clear'

"AT least when there's an accident because someone can't sleep my conscience will be clear."

That was the warning from the owner of a trucker's caf in Stretton as his lay-by was closed down.

Alan Mossley wanted the stop to stay open for tired drivers even though his business was shut.

But councillors voted to close everything at last week's meeting of the traffic committee.

They heard the lay-by, at the junction of Hall Lane and Tarporley Road, had seen five accidents as trucks turned right into the stop including one fatal smash involving a HGV.

Mr Mossley, from Rhyl, told them a crash barrier could be installed to prevent right hand turns.

He added: "It needs a slight alteration so hundreds of lorry drivers can use it. I have seen people come in virtually asleep."

But Warrington Borough Council's head of transport, Phil Johnson, said: "Putting a crash barrier in the road would create an obstruction."
