Milestone in £120 million Golden Square development

A NEW milestone has been reached in the £120 million Golden Square development.

The building that has provided the main electrical supply to the area for 30 years was officially taken out of use on Friday.

This was in preparation for its impending demolition, which will make way for the new shopping centre extension.

It was a particularly poignant moment for those residents and officials who vividly remember the building's inception.

Current councillor Mike Hannon worked on the original building more than 25 years ago, as did the late husband of Northwich resident Mary Hazelhurst.

She and her son Derek were invited to be present at the start of the demolition work.

Clr Hannon commented: "The construction of the original substation was both unique and complicated and would certainly test the skills of bricklayers today."

He added: "This landmark is close to the heart of Mary and Derek, and they wanted to be here to celebrate it."

The new Golden Square development will bring a bus interchange, 60 new shops and up to 1,200 jobs to Warrington's town centre.
