DUMP GETS GO AHEAD

DUMP GETS GO AHEAD

CAMPAIGNERS have been left reeling after plans for a rubbish dump in the Middlewich countryside were given the green light today, Wednesday.

In a shock move by a county council committee, which was expected to choose between applications for a landfill site at Kinderton Lodge or at Clayhanger, near Crewe, both sites have been approved.

The public gallery was full to hear the final decision of the county council's Development Regulatory Committee (DRC), after seven years of campaigning and waiting.

Clr Mark Dickson, county councillor for Middlewich, said: "I don't think that there's anything more that myself, Chalky White or the additional support groups that have made arguments over the past seven years, could do.

"We've done everything that we possibly can to try to stop this and this decision has come as a massive disappointment for everyone involved."

Both applications will now go before the Secretary of State as a formality, and Clr Dickson said he and fellow campaigners will write to him in a last ditch attempt to block the plans.
