Market tales are retold in anniversary guided tours

MYSTERIES were revealed and old tales told to a new generation.

It was all part of Mark Olly's special guided tours of Warrington Market last weekend.

When the market started in 1255, the local population was around 600 people.

Today the market employs about 600 people serving the local population in Warrington of more than 200,000 people.

Warrington's TV presenter Mark Olly ended his tour at Butterworth's stall.

There he told the story of how Mr Butterworth saved the old market clock from demolition in 1974, when the old market building was being knocked down after relocation into the building used today.

Stephen Pickering, Market manager, said: "These tours have been a fantastic success.

"I am very grateful to Mark Olly for bringing our history alive in such an exciting manner.

"Each tour was only supposed to be 30 minutes.

"However, the enthusiasm of everyone taking part made each one last well over an hour. They were very successful."
