Rising to the challenge to say thanks for Rory

WISTASTON'S Andy Latham and Richard Collins have conquered the famous Three Peaks Challenge in the name of charity.

Andy, aged 27, took up the challenge with brother-in-law Richard, as a thank you to Alder Hey Hospital where his baby son Rory had been treated.

Little Rory was born with a condition called gastroschis, where the intestines have grown outside the body.

Thankfully following an operation at the hospital he is now fine.

Richard, a gas engineer for Spectrum Gas Systems, and Andy, a shunter with Freightliner, started their ascent of Ben Nevis in Scotland at 6am on the Saturday before tackling England's Scafell Pike and finishing at Snowdon in Wales.

Richard, of Milton Drive, said: "We had done some training for the hike, but unfortunately I had injured my left leg just before and I ended up overcompensating for it and injuring my right leg!

"By Scafell I was in absolute agony. But we managed to complete it within the 24 hours and it was a great experience.

"Andy had brought a new pair of boots before the event which was probably not the best idea - the boots are worn in now, but then so are his feet!"

After raising almost £700 for the hospital's Ronald McDonald House, both men were keen to thank their companies for their sponsorship and support.
