In-law case

A WARRINGTON man has won the right to marry his daughter-in-law following a landmark court case.

Judges at the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of the 58-year-old man and his 37-year-old partner who had previously been married to the man's son.

During the Strasbourg hearing on Tuesday the couple claimed the ban breached their human rights.

The court heard the man's son and daughter-in-law who officially divorced in 1997 have a son who is the grandson of the woman's new partner.

The applicants have lived together since 1996 and the child 'now calls the first applicant Dad'.

Following the result the couple were awarded nearly £12,000 in costs and expenses.

The case now means the Government must now consider changing national legislation to allow automatic right for any parents-in-law to marry their children-in-law.
