Children's lives are at risk on this road

CONCERNS have been raised that children are at risk because road safety improvements have not been carried out on Mount Pleasant Drive.

According to campaigners, four youngsters have been knocked down over the past few years as they tried to cross the road close to Woodford Lodge High School and a BMX track.

The chairman and ex vice-chairman of Over4all residents' association says repeated requests for a pelican crossing or some measures to slow the traffic down have been refused.

Chairman Alan Bailey said: "I've been on to the county council about this for two years.

"When children cross the road to school there are no pelican crossings. They are taking their life in their hands with the speeding traffic down there."

Alan Halpin, who was vice chairman of the association between 2000 and 2004, said: "We were asking for a crossing for children to cross the road to a school and a BMX track.

"We asked for traffic calming measures but they wouldn't spend the money.

"How many people have been run over in Nixon Drive, for example?

"Speed is a problem on every road in Winsford."

Mr Halpin said they had also asked for a pelican crossing in Denbigh Drive where Over Hall School is situated.

He added: "We were told we couldn't have one as there was no money."

A Cheshire County Council spokesman said: "As part of our new Local Transport Plan we have asked the Government for funding to put the whole of the roads network on the Over Estate under the microscope.

"This would include traffic management, road safety and pedestrian facilities.

"We would not at this stage want to look at one particular issue in isolation."
