Inquiry will have the power over cables case

AN independent inquiry is the only way to decide on whether overhead power cables can run through Lymm's fields.

That is the view of residents who believe Scottish Power's plans for a power line to run from Lostock in mid Cheshire to Carrington in Greater Manchester will further erode the environment of the area.

They asked Scottish Power to change the route to stop it running through green fields.

A second round of consultation into the proposals was published this week - but the energy giants say the route cannot be changed, and it would be too expensive to try.

Clr Sheila Woodyatt, borough council member for Lymm, said: "These large companies do ride roughshod over little people and they pay only lip service to consultation.

"The fair way to sort this out is to have a public inquiry and let an independent person make their decision.

"The people I represent believe that our environment is precious.

"We have had too much damage done already and we do not want any more."

The proposals will stay on show in Lymm Library on Davies Way until October 6 when officials from Scottish Power will meet with the Department of Trade and Industry.

And Clr Woodyatt says she hopes the DTI will then demand that a public inquiry takes place.

"I hope the DTI makes the right decision," she added.

Scottish Power was unavailable for comment as the Warrington Guardian went to press.
