No fans for 'Big Beast'

THE 'Big Beast' of politics has not found favour with the leader of Warrington's Conservatives.

Ken Clarke has become the first famous name to throw his hat into the ring for the leadership of party.

But Clr Keith Bland says he wants the new leader to be one of the party's rising stars rather than one of the old guard - and favours grassroots hero David Davis.

"Until the others come forward it's a one horse race," said Clr Bland, the Conservative leader on the borough council and ward member for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft. But I am hoping David Davis will come forward to give Ken Clarke a run for his money."

Clr Fiona Bruce, the Tory's candidate for South Warrington in last years General Election said: "What is important is that whoever the new leader is, they communicate to people what we have to offer - helping the vulnerable, ensuring social justice and enabling us to build a better society for our country."
