Town up for the cup

WARRINGTON Town will be gunning for a cup double after earning their first win of their UniBond First Division campaign on Tuesday.

Glenn Walker's side face an away trip to Gateshead on Sunday, kick-off 3pm, in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, before making the trip to fellow Premier Division side Witton on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm, for the first round of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

The Town boss will have Phil and Graeme Mitchell available after holidays, although Lee Smith (broken arm) could be out for some time.

Chris Bermingham's return from suspension at Witton will be countered by the start of James Featherstone's three-match ban, but Town expect Dave Tickle to be fit by Sunday after illness ruled him out of Tuesday's 2-1 win against Chorley at Cantilever Park.

Peter Wright's 33rd-minute header put the visitors in front, but mid-table Town came roaring back in the second half.

Substitute Gareth Evans' close-range finish levelled the match in the 68th minute, before Steve Latham won it two minutes from time with a stunning overhead kick from the edge of the box.

Town: Ian Lowe, Danny Salt, Gary Randles, Marvin Molyneaux, Lee Webster, Adrian Reilly, Craig Heenighan, Steve Latham, Paul McNally, James Featherstone, Andy Moores. Subs: Gareth Evans, Ritchie Sinker. Not used: Paul Davies.

Town came from two goals down for the second time in a week when they drew 2-2 at Spalding United on Saturday.

They found themselves a goal down within 12 seconds as Jason Barnett capitalised on confusion in the defence.

Keeper Ian Lowe made a good save as Town struggled to get into the game, with Latham also denying the home side with a last-gasp clearance.

Town were facing defeat when Hlengwa's overhead kick made it 2-0 in the 25th minute, but Paul McNally pulled a goal back nine minutes later with a deflected effort after good work from Latham and Tickle.

Town then took charge of the game, with Featherstone making amends for two missed chances with a 68th-minute penalty after the referee spotted a clear handball in the box.

Smith had to make a goal-line clearance to deny Spalding, but Town could have won it had the home side not managed to scramble Marvin Molyneaux's deflected cross off the line.

Town: Ian Lowe, Lee Smith, Danny Salt, Marvin Molyneaux, Gary Randles, Adrian Reilly, Craig Heenighan, Steve Latham, Paul McNally, James Featherstone, Dave Tickle. Subs not used: Paul Davies, Lee Webster, Gareth Evans.
