Residents must show bottle to save waste

ENVIRONMENTAL enthusiasts in three villages near Northwich will have the chance to go green and recycle more as they trial a new scheme.

Residents in Moulton, Davenham and Cuddington will have the chance to recycle their plastic bottles in a 15 week trial set to start later this month.

Vale Royal Borough Council recycling officers have been out and about encouraging them to join in.

The officers and the trial's mascot, Millie the milk bottle, have been handing out plastic bottles of water featuring the recycling message and a helpline number.

Clr Malcolm Gaskill, lead councillor for waste management, said: "Millie is our new recycling mascot and has joined the team to raise the public's awareness that this recycling trial is just for plastic bottles - not all types of plastic.

"We are saying to residents in the trial areas if it's a plastic bottle, wash it, squash it and recycle it."

The recycling trial comes as Cheshire county councillor Eveleigh Moore Dutton, chairman of the waste management board, calls for more household waste to be recycled.

She said: "The problem of waste is one not only for the council but for all residents in Cheshire. We want everyone involved.

"We need to recycle as much household waste as possible to prevent it all going to landfill sites.

"Recycling centres are put to great use by the community and are clean and efficient while reducing the need for landfill sites."

Last year the county council recycled 28 per cent of all waste at its waste recycling centres.
