£2BILLION TOO HIGH A PRICE TO PAY

A ROW has broken out over the cost of replacing the country's 46 fire control rooms with regional centres - one of which will be based in Great Sankey.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) say they were told by a Government minister that the cost of replacing the current control rooms with nine regional centres, including one at Lingley Mere Business Park, could hit the £2billion mark.

The FBU insists that if costs do spiral, then cuts to front line services are 'a real risk' and council tax could be pushed up. Work on the Warrington site is due to start in 2007.
