Pilot Jasmin has sky high ambitions

A YOUNG pilot from Priestley College has been presented with her 'silver wings' following a successful first solo flight at Shropshire Aero Club.

Seventeen-year-old Jasmin Munir, from Latchford, is studying for her European private pilot's licence and makes the long journey to the Shropshire airfield every Sunday for her flying training.

The completion of her first solo flight marks the culmination of many hours of 'ground school', which is undertaken as part of Priestley College's aviation course.

Her proud mother and younger brother and sister, who both recently took to the skies with Jasmin as part of Shropshire Aero Club's 'Young Eagles Day', witnessed her solo flight.

Jasmin said: "Twelve months ago I never dreamed that I would learn to fly and achieve my first solo. I was particularly honoured to be sent solo by senior instructor John Davies, a retired British Airways Boeing 747 Captain, as my ambition is to fly the Jumbo.

"I will remember this day for the rest of my life."

The solo flight marked a memorable week for Jasmin as she also flew a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet into San Francisco Airport onboard a flight-training simulator, when she took part in a visit to the British Airways pilot training centre at Cranebank, Heathrow.

It was all the more remarkable, as she has not yet started to learn how to drive!

The A-level student has to fit her flying training and Civil Aviation Authority exams into an already busy schedule at Priestley and devotes much of her spare time to flying.

Jasmin will now have to concentrate on examinations in navigation, meteorology and the airplane technical, as well as advanced flying training.
