Don't forget our soldiers

A SOLDIER'S wife is urging people not to forget the work of the armed forces in Iraq, after her husband had a lucky escape.

Karen Brittle's husband Robert, aged 36, is a sergeant with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers based in Shaibah, northern Iraq.

He has just gone back out there until November after a two-week spell at home.

But Mrs Brittle, of Mardale Avenue, Orford, says now she knows what he has been facing, she cannot wait until his tour of duty ends.

On his way home to the army airport in Iraq, his coach was 100 meters away from being blown up by a road side bomb.

Luckily a convoy, sent out to free up the road ahead, spotted the three chain bombs on the roadside and sent the coach back while they were made safe.

Mrs Brittle said: "A 100 meters in front of them there were bombs ready to go off.

"It doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened.

"When he first went out there in May, I thought he would be OK, but he is always in danger. He told me these things are happening every day."

Her husband is attached to the medical squadron and his job is to make sure vehicles are kept in good condition.

He has been in the Army for nearly 20 years.

She added: "I know that people have other things to think about, but I wanted people to know how hard they are working out there."
