Porter carries home the points

CONGLETON 1st XI captain Rob Porter was the hero on Saturday as he dashed Sale's victory hopes at the death.

Visitors Sale looked odds on to win at 176 for 6, with five overs left, in reply to Congleton's first innings score of 189 for 6.

However they lost two more wickets for only five more runs to leave them on 181 for 8.

A single in the next over meant eight runs were needed from two overs for victory.

Porter then struck twice in consecutive deliveries, thanks to a catch from Mark Potts and a ball which hit middle stump, to leave a stunned Sale bowled out for 183.

Congleton earned 24 points from the tense win to leave them in ninth place in the table. But they are 31 points clear of the relegation zone and travel tomorrow to bottom side Tattenhall.

Congleton lost their first wicket at 13, but rallied with partnerships of 36, 66 and 40 for the next three wickets.

Paul Mitchell top scored with a fine 64 runs on a difficult pitch. And Dan Robinson scored an unbeaten 35 from only 30 balls.

Porter hit 32 off 62 deliveries, and opener Tom Blease hit 21.

Porter took three wickets for 51, Andy Farr claimed three for 49, Cain Mawby took two for 24, and Robinson and Mark Potts picked up one wicket each.
