Unbeaten start puts Crewe joint top

CREWE FC maintained their solid start to the season with a 4-1 victory at home to Monk FC.

Jon Dawson (2), Danny Massey and Lee Westwood were on target as Ian O'Reilly's boys moved joint top of Mid Cheshire League Division Two.

Massy opened his account thanks to Steve Parker's set-up on 10 minutes before supplying Dawson who doubled Crewe's advantage.

Dawson made the most of Parker's second assist for a 3-0 lead at the break and although Monk pegged one back, Westwood's stunning solo goal wrapped up a convincing victory.

That's three points in the bag after Crewe FC picked up one on the road, last Thursday.

Lee Heath secured it with the last kick of the game as he tucked away sub Jimmy Constagan's neat through ball.

Unbeaten with seven out of nine on the board, O'Reilly isn't getting carried away just yet.

"You've got to be happy with the start," he explained.

"We're still undefeated after three games but I'm not getting carried away.

"We've got to keep on winning.

"It's important we win our home games and pick up away points as we go along.

"A lot of teams in this division seem to be taking points off each other.

"I thought we were a bit fortunate at Glossop.

"We dominated for the first 35 minutes without scoring but conceded another set piece just after half-time and were in trouble.

"We went with four up front at the end and Beefy got the goal for a point."

Crewe FC were due to entertain Lostock Gralam at home last night with a trip to Broadheath Central on Saturday.

O'Reilly has secured the signing of ex-Congleton centre-half Michael Owen and hopes to bring in former Nantwich teammate Chris Hampshire.

"We're glad to have Mike on board," he added.

"We're always on the look out for good players and we need to strengthen now rather than later.

"Mike and Chris will both play a big part for us this season.

"I keep saying it but its going to be a squad effort to win promotion."
