Century is just for openers for high flying Davenham

A FANTASTIC opening partnership of 111 put Davenham on course for victory against Mere at Butchers Stile on Saturday.

Opening batsmen Dave Ashley (67) and Alan Wright (50) were in good form as Davenham looked set for a big total as 100 was reached in the 13th over.

Unfortunately Wright was subsequently removed and his opening partner Ashley lost his wicket in the 22nd over, as the runs started to dry up.

Andy Cwiklinski went soon after and Davenham were left on 134-3.

It proved to be only a minor wobble, however, as Mark Greaves (30), Tom Screen (18) and an unbeaten 28 from Louis Bentley took the Davenham score to 224-7 after 43 overs.

In response, Mere got off to a good start, putting on 54 for the first wicket.

But destructive bowling from Ian Cwiklinski and Dean Jackson ripped through the Mere line up as they slumped to 91-7.

A late burst from the lower order was not enough to deny Davenham the win as the visitors were bowled out for just 163.
