Bridge is a crash hotspot

RUNCORN Euro-MP Chris Davies has called for changes to the law after recent figures showed a local railway bridge has been hit more than 25 times since 1994.

The bridge, on Picow Farm Road, Runcorn, has been crashed into 28 times by vehicles, making it one of the most-struck bridges in the region.

The statistics have led Mr Davies to write to the Transport Secretary to call for the introduction of a number of measures to the Road Transport Bill.

Mr Davies said: "For safety reasons it should be mandatory for local authorities to erect signs to warn of particularly low bridges."

The Liberal Democrat MEP also wants the penalty imposed on drivers who strike railway bridges increased. He wants to see the penalty rise from three points to six.
