Maze vandals leave a trail of destruction

FURIOUS summer fun organisers have slammed the actions of drunken vandals who have twice rampaged through a carefully crafted maize maze in the Northwich countryside.

The crop labyrinth was created at Great Budworth ice cream farm for children and adults to enjoy during the summer holidays but organisers arrived at the site on Wednesday and Sunday to find beer cans on the floor, signs ripped up and maize cobs broken.

Sarah Williamson, from the ice cream farm, said: "It's been devastated and trashed - there have been kids in there and they've destroyed it.

"They had left beer cans in there, fallen and broken maize cobs and pulled up signs and chucked them into a field of dairy cows."

She added: "They don't realise just how much work the farmer and I have put into the maze - cutting it out, putting signs in and planning - for them to come one night and be stupid, foolish and immature.

"They've spoilt it."

The maze monitors, who look after the activity and make sure nobody gets completely lost, have been busy trying to put things right and Sarah says they have managed to make some alterations to the maze to make it workable for the rest of the summer.

She said: "The maze monitors have done a remarkable job and cleaned it up - we've made the best of what we can, altered it a bit and taped it up where it was trashed. It's still open and still as good."

The maze trail is open every day between noon and 6pm until the end of September. Admission is £3 for adults and £2.50 for children and there is a free ice cream for those who complete the maze.
