The road to success

A WINCHAM bus driver has proved he's streets ahead of the competition by becoming the 2005 Bus Driver Idol for Arriva North West and Wales.

Dave Barrass, 62, who has worked from the Winsford garage for nearly six years, scooped the award after customers called the competition hotline last month to praise his helpful nature.

His assistance to wheelchair users and travellers with prams was also commended.

And Dave, of Ashwood Park, was shocked by the news. He said: "I was overwhelmed when I heard I had been chosen as the winner but it felt really great to know that ordinary passengers had taken the time to phone up about me.

"I like to go that extra mile to help people in Middlewich, where I drive, to get on the bus as I don't have a low rise step so otherwise they would be stuck but that's just part of my job as far as I'm concerned. I like to help."

Dave, who was presented with a trophy and £100 cheque on Friday, is now looking forward to spending his winnings. He said: "It's my 40th wedding anniversary next month so I'm using the money and taking all my family out for a meal to celebrate.

"They're all really proud of me winning Bus Idol and I'm hoping to be entered again next year. I would like to thank all the customers who called in and nominated me.

Marketing manager Nick Gordon said: "We were staggered, not only by the number of calls we received, but also by the complimentary comments given."
