Cheques go out as swimathon pays off for good causes

THE ROTARY Club of Biddulph has handed out £6,000 to local charities.

The money was raised at its successful Swimathon event where teams of sponsored swimmers competed to cover the longest distance.

A cheque for £2,000 was given to the North Staffordshire Strokes R Us Support Group, who provide stroke sufferers and carers with somewhere to come for information and to share experiences.

Another £2,000 went to the North Staffordshire Alzheimers Support Group, which has the only help for sufferers and carers in the community.

Guide Dogs for the Blind accepted the last £2,000 to train more dogs to give freedom, independence and companionship to blind people.

None of these groups receive government funding.

Biddulph Rotary President Peter Swann said: "It is very gratifying the funds are going to groups that provide such essential services which are not otherwise available."
