Peruvian adventure will help blind children

MEDICAL secretary Beverley Langley will be hitting the Inca trail to the legendary Aztec city of Machu Picchu next month.

Beverley, 42, from Sandbach, will be taking leave from Leighton Hospital for an adventurous charity mission around Peru.

She currently works in Leighton's specialist Eye Care Centre and will be raising cash on the trip for the National Blind Children's Society.

She said: "Travelling to Peru has been a dream of mine for a long time and I am really excited about what is ahead of me.

"Back in the early 1980s I worked in a doctor's surgery and he went to Peru, which was some place to go on holiday back then.

"When he came back and told us about the fantastic scenery and the chance to see a different way of life, it struck a chord and I am now able to go. I can fulfil a dream while helping other people.

"The National Blind Children's Society really appealed to me as a charity because I see people who have problems with their sight every day, as well as their delight when that problem is cured or alleviated.

"The charity also assured me that all the money raised would go towards the children themselves."

Beverley is an old hand at exciting foreign ventures, having already cycled across Cuba two years ago, raising £3,100 in aid of the Queen Charlotte Research Centre in London.

This time her trip will begin with a flight into Peru's capital city, Lima, before transferring to the Inca city of Cusco and trekking at high altitude through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

The region is home to some major Inca sites, including the spectacular ruins at Runkurukay and Sayacmarca, as well as Beverley's ultimate destination - Machu Picchu.

She added: "Obviously it will be tough, but I have been on two training weekends in Snowdonia and my gym trainer has devised a schedule for me, which I've been following for the past six months."
