Kenneth and Margaret are bowled over by new caravan

WARRINGTON families can now enjoy the benefits of a fully accessible caravan holiday in North Wales.

Funded and equipped by the Warrington Guardian's charity of the year, the Warrington Disability Partnership, the caravan in Pensarn caters specifically for the needs of disabled people.

Anne Hands, from Yeovil Close, in Woolston, visited the caravan with her parents, Kenneth and Margaret Wightman, and her mother-in-law, Martha Hands.

Anne's parents, both in their mid-seventies, who live in Banks Crescent, Latchford, have visited a crown green bowling festival in Colwyn Bay every year for the past 15 years.

Mrs Hands, aged 43, said: "With my mum's condition becoming worse, last year was too much hassle. I don't think we could have gone this year without the caravan.

"It was the best thing for their freedom and independence, it gave them that back."

Mrs Hands, who makes regular use of the Centre for Independent Living on Beaufort Street, said the holiday was a lot cheaper than some they had paid for before.

She said: "The layout of the caravan was excellent.

"The sliding doors to the bedroom and the bathroom meant that there was always plenty of space.

"It enabled wheelchair users to open the doors and to enter the rooms.

"The end bedroom was very spacious and the aids to help people get in and out of bed were excellent, plus the bathroom's walk-in shower was used extensively and was really beneficial.

"We re-booked for next year straightaway and I have recommended it to everyone I know because it is such a brilliant facility."

Dave Thompson, WDP chairman, said more support was needed to continue to equip the caravan.

He said: "We would like to invite any donation, large or small, from individuals or institutions, and ask schools, colleges, youth groups or churches to consider helping our cause.

"Anything at all from a few pounds to a few thousand, any help would be appreciated."
