'We're doing this for Susan'

WHEN father and son Ron and Martin Kettle signed up to take part in a 15-mile bike ride in aid of Cancer Research UK earlier this year, their motivation came straight from the heart.

Two years ago, their lives were shattered when cancer claimed the life of their 'inspiring' wife and mother, Susan Kettle.

Susan had been diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years earlier, but beat the disease and was given the all clear seven years later.

Sadly, the cancer returned and despite chemotherapy, Susan lost her fight for life aged 52 in April 2003.

Roy, of Albert Road, Grappenhall, who was also joined on the bike ride at Tatton Park by his brother, Roger, said: "Susan was an absolute inspiration, she was so brave and so positive throughout her illness, it was quite incredible really.

"She was more concerned about the welfare of everyone else throughout her treatment. If she were here today she would have told me to jump on my bike and get on with it.

"She remained positive right up until the end, vowing that she would beat the cancer.

"She stayed so determined and so strong that we couldn't be anything other than inspired by her. Her strength was also a great comfort to us."

Roy, who also completed last year's Tatton Park bike ride and is a marshal at the annual Race for Life, added: "Fundraising is a way of giving something back and I'm sure Susan would be behind us all the way."

The trio raised £277 for Cancer Research UK.

It's a total Roy hopes to beat when he takes part in next year's bike ride.

Roy is hoping to set up a three mile circular sponsored walk in Grappenhall in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
