Bears enjoy sweet smell of six-cess

CONGLETON Town made the perfect start to their quest for success in North West Counties Division One.

Paul Moore targeted six points out of six and got what he wanted after the Bears turned over Abbey Hey 2-0 at Booth Street on Tuesday night

Phil McDiarmid set them up for victory with a 26th minute opener before Phil Howard rubberstamped their dominance two minutes from time.

A 100 per cent start for the lads after building on their 2-0 opening day victory at Atherton Collieries

It didn't take them long to get off to a flier, notching the league's fastest opening goal of the season when Steve Johnstone found the net in just 84 seconds.

The same man could have made it two thanks to the supply from strike-partner Howard but the duo combined again successfully for the winner.

Johnstone was brought down inside the area, allowing Howard to step up and covert the 28th minute spot-kick with ease.

"It's a good start but I'm not going to start jumping up and down yet," exclaimed Moore.

"We've not played anyone of great stature at the moment.

"I think we could have won by four or five at Atherton.

"Phil Howard has been away so there's not been much of a chance to play him and Steve Johnstone together but they both scored and they'll get better.

"We're missing Dean Canning at the moment through suspension and he's a big player for us.

"Abbey Hey tried to stifle us in midfield and it took us 25 minutes to get to grips with it but when we scored, I thought there was only one winner.

"We could have scored a few again but I'd settle for 1-0 every game.

"Defensively we're looking solid and Chris Jackson has been awesome."

With a great start to the league campaign in the bag, it's FA Cup football tomorrow, at home to high-scoring Midland Football Alliance opponents Romulus.

A trip to Alsager in the Cheshire Cup follows on Tuesday, KO 7.45pm.

"They're big games for us but I'm looking forward to the league campaign," added Moore.

"We've got Stone next, who have lost their first two. Nine out of nine points would be a brilliant start for us.

"I'm not getting carried away, it's a long, long season. But it's nice to see us up there second in the table after last season."
