Dabbers skittled by Skem

NANTWICH Town went down 4-1 at early pacesetters Skelmersdale United on Tuesday night.

After annihilating Stone Dominoes 9-0 on opening day, the hosts unloaded with more goals against the Dabbers.

Carl Osman bagged his fourth of the season to put United in front on 21 minutes although the visitors were still in it at the break.

Skem started the second half in style with Osman adding a quick second but Nantwich boosted their hopes when Adam Beasley netted on 56 minutes.

Stuart Rudd killed resistance just three minutes later and Rodgers wrapped it up for the likely title-contenders on 70 minutes.

It was unfortunate for Nantwich after starting the season with a 2-0 victory over Bacup Borough.

After a goalless first half, the Dabbers stepped it up and took the lead thanks to a stunning strike from Paul Donnelly.

The former Port Vale trialist capped a grand job filling in as left-back with a 30-yard drive that nestled nicely on 55 minutes.

Domination continued and easy chances went begging before Stuart Scheuber wrapped it up with a left-footed screamer, 12 minutes from time.

"You always want to start with a win," explained Davis.

"It was a good performance and I was really pleased.

"Everyone's put a lot of preparation into that first game and the lads did what was asked of them."

A clean sheet for giant keeper Lloyd Parry on his league debut was also pleasing.

"He did well against Bacup although he didn't have a lot to do in the first half," continued Davis.

"He's so big and commands his area well but the whole back four played well too."

Davis bolstered his squad with the addition of Donnelly and ex-Stone midfielder Nick Ward who had recently been on trial with Leek Town.

"Paul Donnelly's been filling in at left back while Paul Taylor is away and he's done a good job for us," added Davis.

"He looks a good player and I think we'll move him into a different role when Taylor is back.

"Nick Ward's a central midfielder and he's a good addition to the squad."

Nantwich face their second of four successive trips at Maine Road on Saturday.

l Nantwich are planning to hold Under 18 trials at Jackson Avenue on Wednesday, August 24, starting at 7pm.
