Cup's a family affair

A FATHER and son helped secure cup final success for a Warrington bowls team this week.

Richmonds captain Peter Lawrenson and his son Robert won their games as the team secured Warrington Public Parks' Bowls League's Guardian Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Peter defeated Lovely Lane's Keith Lee 21-16 and Robert beat A Smith 21-19 in the overall 223-205 success at Crosfields Recreation Club in Hood Lane, Great Sankey.

The man of the match award went to Richmonds' Mike Widocks for his 21-7 victory over Mike Burrows.

Widocks' achievement was his side's best of eight winners from 12 contests, while Damian Morrison's 21-7 win against A Dix-Baker was the best result for Lovely Lane.

Simultaneously, on the adjacent green, King and Queen headed to victory against Victoria Park One in the league's Guardian Supplementary Cup Final.

The win marked a personal achievement for John Clarke as this cup triumph was his third trophy success in as many weeks.

Clarke was a member of the King and Queen A team that won Warrington and North Cheshire Bowls Association's Challenge Cup and Silcock Cup competitions over the previous two weekends.

His 21-13 defeat of J Russell on Sunday helped to steer King and Queen to a 236-216 win.

King and Queen's best winner was Frank Hogg, who won the man of the match award for his 21-11 success against F Smith.

P Rowles was the best of Victoria's five winners with a 21-14 defeat of Ray Goodhand.
