Driver airlifted to hospital after bridge smash

AN ELDERLY man had to be airlifted to hospital after he lost control of his car and collided with a bridge at Peel Lane, Astbury last Tuesday.

Congleton firefighters were first on the scene to provide emergency oxygen to the man before an air ambulance took him to Macclesfield Hospital.

It is thought he had felt unwell at the wheel before the crash.

Firefighter Keith Whittingham said: "When we arrived at the scene witnesses were trying to reassure the man.

"We gave him oxygen as he was having difficulty breathing and had gone very white suffering from shock."

The car spun round and blocked the bridge, leaving the road closed before the vehicle was taken away the same day.

County Highways teams attended the scene as the cars impact brought part of the bridge's stone wall down.

The road is now open and safety barriers are in place.
