Control switch angers firefighters union

EMERGENCY calls to the fire brigade will soon be switched from the current control room at Winsford to a centre at Warrington under controversial government reforms.

Under the reforms, the 46 control rooms currently in operation will be scrapped and replaced by nine regional centres in plans that have been slammed by the Fire Brigades Union.

FBU president Ruth Winters said: "To do this at any time would be dangerous and irresponsible.

"But to gamble with the efficiency of the fire service at a time when the threat of terrorism makes its efficiency a matter of life and death is almost criminally irresponsible."
