Mersey crossing decision has been postponed until January

ANGER and dismay greeted the postponement of the new Mersey crossing decision - until January 2006.

Bridge campaigners fear the government is playing politics with an issue of key importance to road users and businesses in Warrington, and the north west.

The Department of Transport now says it wants the Regional Transport Boards to decide where funding for the bridge and other projects should go.

But this fund is tiny compared to the government pot, and there is not enough money to go round.

Roy Morris, chairman of the Mersey Partnership, added: "I sincerely hope the delays are not based on a desire to use central Government money to bankroll transport developments in London and the south east."

A source in the crossing group said: "What the Government is attempting to do is centralise credit for the successful regional schemes, and devolve blame for the unsuccessful ones."

Clr John Joyce, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: "I am extremely disappointed with this decision and I am concerned about what affects the delay could have on Warrington."

The £335m bridge would be built in Halton, near the Runcorn to Widnes bridge.

A Department of Transport spokesman said: "We are not abdicating responsibility. People in the area should play a significant part in these decisions."
