Recycling rates drop

RECYCLING rates have fallen in Warrington, says Euro-MP Chris Davies - and he thinks we compare badly to our green European neighbours.

He said the borough council has missed its recycling target last year and, like many north west authorities, could do the same this year.

Mr Davies, a Liberal Democrat, said the Government set a recycling figure of 17 per cent for 2003/4, the most recent year for which figures are available.

But a DEFRA study published in August found Warrington's recycling rate actually dropped from 13 per cent to nine per cent.

Mr Davies said: "Denmark and Sweden are among those setting a fine example by reducing the amount of waste generated and we need to follow suit."
