Church calls for fund help

MEMBERS of Risley Independent Methodist Church are calling on the community to help contribute towards the modernisation of their building.

Work has already started on extensive building adjustments to the church, situated on Fearnhead Lane, in order for it to comply with the new disability access laws.

The works scheme includes building a new corridor, disabled toilet, widening of the existing porch and fitting of a ramp.

But while most of the work is under way thanks to a grant of £9,000 from Wren Waste Recycling Scheme in conjunction with Historic Cheshire Churches there is still a considerable shortfall to be met.

The Garfield Weston Foundation has also contributed a grant of £5,000 and £4,000 was received from the Independent Methodist Connexion.

But at least another £10,000 is needed for the work to be completed so that the church is fully equipped to facilitate the entire community.

Already the church has purchased a Braille hymnbook and is looking at the possibility of installing the Loop system for the hard of hearing sometime in the future.

The church is appealing for local businesses, large or small, or anyone who has had any connection with the church, who perhaps were married or baptised there, to help with raising the much-needed cash.

Church secretary Lorna Percival said: "I would urge everyone in the community to support us in any way they can. Everything is upside down at the moment but we are looking ahead to when the work is completed but we need help to get there.

"We have a new pre school group starting in September and it is depending on the new work being completed by then so the race is on to find more money."

l AN indoor and outdoor garden party will take place this Saturday, August 13 from 2pm to help with fundraising. Attractions include numerous stalls and a choice of refreshments, including cream teas.
