Festival all systems go

ORGANISERS of this year's Northwich Festival are hopeful it will be their biggest and best yet following the unveiling of a bumper, four-day programme.

The town's annual end-of-summer bash will run from Friday, August 26, until Monday, August 29, at Moss Farm, with lots going on in between.

Festival director Tim Pickering said: "The event is getting bigger every year.

"This time around we have tried to make sure there is something for everybody and by spreading the programme over four days, we have been able to fit even more in."

Festivities commence with a ladies' night on Friday with drag queen Pussy Galore performing her raucous stage show from 8pm. Tickets are priced £8.

Sport is the starring theme on Saturday with a women's rugby competition with teams from all over the country competing from midday.

Festival headliners The Bogtrotters bring their brand of Celtic folk music to the stage on Saturday night fresh from the film set of Demi Moore's latest movie Half Light, tickets £7.

Melody takes over again on Sunday evening with the grand final of the Song from the Heart of Cheshire singer-songwriter contest organised by Scottish John of the Witton Chimes, tickets £3.

Heats for the final are currently being held every Tuesday at the Witton Street venue, with first prize an acoustic guitar donated by Northwich Music Centre.

Monday's main event is regular crowd favourite the Cheshire Strongman contest, with six events designed to test the county's mightiest to their limit.

Tim added: "Cheshire Strongman is now under the control of former entrant Mark Preece who has transformed the competition into a battle of giants.

"He has added new events, making it a lot tougher, and entrants are now coming from a much wider area."

World bodybuilding champion Paul Sutton is also on the bill for a muscle-bound Monday, and will be giving a demonstration in the main marquee.
