Man threatened to slit partner's throat

A NORTHWICH man will be sentenced in Crown Court after admitting threatening to kill his former partner in a 999 call.

Robert Knight, 43, of Lilac Drive, appeared in Northwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to threatening to cut the throat of his former partner and mother of his two young children.

In the 999 call, made at 7pm on August 1, Knight said: "I'm going to kill her today.

"It's not a threat, it's a promise. I'm going to put a knife straight through her throat."

Police attended Knight's home following the telephone call and seized a case of knives and hatchets.

He was then arrested and, during an interview at Northwich police station, admitted making the 999 call because he was upset he was not being given access to his children.

Derek McDonald, defending, said: "He was denied access to his children because his ex-partner found a new relationship.

"He was very silly but he was at the lowest point in his life."

The court heard that Knight has a problem with alcohol and was drunk when he made the 999 call.

Magistrates were also told that Knight told his mother he wanted to kill himself.

Mr McDonald said: "He does drink like everybody else but has a particular problem with whisky."

Magistrates decided their sentencing powers were not sufficient to deal with Knight and committed him to Chester Crown Court.

Don Beckett, chairman of the bench, said: "We feel this is too serious for us to deal with so we will commit it to Crown Court.

"We are going to refuse bail because of the likelihood of you committing serious offences against your ex-partner, for your own protection and the protection of the public."
