Smoke alarm saves house owner from kitchen blaze

FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to take up their offer of free smoke alarms.

It was an alarm that averted a potentially bad fire on Friday.

At 10.30pm a faulty ignition switch on the gas hob at a house on Evelyn Street, Orford, ignited a pizza box that had been placed on top of the hob.

The householder, alerted by the smoke alarm, extinguished the small fire using a wet towel.

A fire spokesman said: "Carelessness in kitchens can lead to serious consequences.

"Faulty appliances are also a potential hazard and should be examined and replaced.

"Fire home safety visits are available for all householders with free smoke alarms from the fire service."
