Barn fire destroys 200 tonnes of straw

TWO hundred tonnes of straw went up in smoke after an arsonist set fire to a barn in Croft.

The barn, off Southworth Lane was completely destroyed and an adjoining building damaged.

One of the farm workers was given oxygen at the scene by the fire service.

He was then taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering a suspected heart attack.

A fire spokesman said: "The outcome could have been far worse if it were not for the prompt action by crews, assisted by farm workers, in preventing any loss of livestock and the spread of fire to adjacent houses."
