Council is wasting energy

CREWE and Nantwich Borough Council is one of the worst authorities in the north west for bringing about improvements in energy efficiency.

Latest statistics show the borough council improved its energy efficiency by only six per cent from 1996 to 2004, making it the third worst local authority in the region.

Only Blackpool Borough Council and Eden District Council achieved lower improvement rates for the eight-year period.

The six per cent improvement is well below the 16 per cent target set by the Government, which expects efficiency levels to be raised by two per cent a year until 2010.

Crewe Euro MP Chris Davies says councils should be given greater financial or legal incentives to take action.
