Something to chew on

GUM chewers should pay a tax to help clean up their mess, claims a Warrington Euro-MP.

Chris Davies wants them to pay a 1p levy on each packet of gum.

Their gum costs three pence per piece - and at least 10 pence to remove.

Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat member of the European Parliament, wants the borough council to back his campaign

He said: "As so many people fail to dispose of gum without causing a mess, the chewers should be required to contribute to the clean up.

"The polluter should pay."

It costs Warrington Borough Council £32,000 a year to clean the streets of chewing gum. It is looking at the lobbying done by other authorities before putting the gum tax to the vote.
