Families learning

PARENTS who went back to school to help their children learn have won certificates from the borough council.

For the Family Literacy course parents spent one full day at school for 14 weeks, working with their children on fun activities to help their children with numeracy and literacy skills.

The courses helped parents to recognise and use the opportunities presented in everyday life, such as a visit to the shops, visits to the park, museum or special events to help their child learn.

The courses also give parents, carers and families the opportunity to brush up their own maths and English skills.

Clr Colin Froggatt, borough council executive member for children's services, said: "This course recognises that parents and family members are our first, most familiar and influential teachers. Families have a powerful influence on our learning throughout our lives."

Funding for Family Learning in Warrington comes through the Learning and Skills Council, Education Standards Funding and is co-ordinated through the Lifelong Learning section of Warrington Borough Council.
