Rescue from Gulliver's

TWO young girls and their grandparents climbed 30ft down a Gulliver's ride after it jammed on Sunday.

A coat is believed to have dropped from their carriage and caught in the mechanism, causing the ride to stop at 4pm.

The two girls aged four and six and their grandparents spent an hour trapped while firefighters worked to rescue them.

They used a manual mechanical winch to pull the car backwards after cutting away the coat. Two fire engines, a hydraulic platform and specialist rescue teams from Knutsford and Merseyside were used. The family were walked down an emergency ladder installed on the ride.

John Boswell, leading firefighter at Warrington Fire Station, said: "Bearing in mind it's the summer holidays and people will be going on these sorts of rides, it's important to follow all the safety instructions. In this case it was lucky the coat was not being worn by anyone when it became caught in the mechanism."

Duncan Phillips, director of design and development at Gulliver's Theme Parks said: "In accordance with our procedures, the ride was immediately evacuated following the incident. We were pleased that no-one was hurt or injured in the process and wish to apologise for any disruption or distress caused to visitors on the day."
