Audit chiefs praise fire authority

INSPECTORS praised the fire authority that covers Knutsford for modernising after strikes two years ago.

The Audit Commission said bosses had shown strong leadership in implementing recent changes.

"Cheshire Fire Authority has risen to the challenges of modernisation," said senior manager Tim Watkinson.

"It is well led, has a good understanding of the communities it serves and consistently delivers improvements for local people."

Two years ago firemen voted for a 16% pay increase linked to modernisation after Knutsford crews joined five national strikes.
