Residents celebrate their new park life

WATKIN Street residents celebrated the official opening of Brickfield Community Park with a family fun day.

Work has finally been completed on the project to transform neglected open space, situated off Orford Lane, into a fully equipped park.

Les Stewart, chairman of the Watkin Street Tenants and Residents' Association, welcomed Warrington's deputy mayor Clr Linda Dirir and her consort, husband Alan Dirir, who officially opened the park last weekend.

Warrington Wolves mascot Wolfie also made a surprise visit.

Mr Stewart has been instrumental in inspiring residents to raise almost £120,000 to transform the land into a facility that can be used by everyone - young and old.

The park is equipped with an all-weather pitch, play equipment, seating, pathways and lighting, which were funded through BIFFA Waste, Warrington Borough Council and WREN.

Mr Stewart said: "This is the culmination of three years of hard work from all the members of the Watkin Street Tenants and Residents' Association and I am delighted that the community has come together to celebrate this achievement."

Warrington Borough Council contributed £17,500 towards the scheme following lobbying by Fairfield and Howley councillors.

Clr Yvonne Fovargue, said: "This is really an example of the community working together to realise a dream. A once derelict site is now an open space at the heart of the community.

"I was delighted that local businesses and the Warrington Wolves were able to contribute towards the success of the day and I know that the park will be valued by all members of the community."
