Town sign star attraction

A PREMIERSHIP footballer could be on his way to Warrington Town this season - but he will only be watching from the sidelines.

Everton striker James Beattie was at Cantilever Park to watch Town's friendly against Altrincham last week, and he could be back for more because their new signing, James Featherstone, is one of his best friends.

The 25-year-old former Ossett Town man, who can play as a centre back or as a striker, was in the same Blackburn Rovers youth team as Beattie, and they are so close that Beattie often unveiled T-shirts having a friendly dig at Featherstone when he scored goals during his Southampton days.

Featherstone, who has joined Town to be closer to his workplace in Liverpool, played one league game for Scunthorpe United and also had a short spell at Boston United.

Town have also captured 20-year-old goalkeeper Craig Bryan from Welsh side TNS, as well as securing the signature of Southport stopper Ian Lowe.

Warrington lost 2-0 to Cammell Laird in a friendly at Cantilever Park on Saturday, four days after defeating Altrincham 5-2 thanks to goals from Michael Bird, Gareth Evans, Matty Farrell and a double from Phil Mitchell.

Boss Glenn Walker has been happy with Town's pre-season so far, and said: "We've been putting in some very encouraging first-half performances, and things are looking good on the fitness side of things.

"It's only when we've made changes in the second half that it's affected us a bit.

"I've got 20 players in the squad now so I'm quite happy, although we're still looking to add one or two more."
