Operation aims to slow down road hogs

POLICE have launched an operation to clamp down on the problem of speeding motorists on the Grange estate.

Residents raised concerns in last week's Guardian over road safety following two incidents in one evening on the estate and police have moved quickly to address the problem.

Insp Brian Roberts, from Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "Following the recent reports of traffic problems on the Grange estate the officers from the Winsford neighbourhood policing team have stepped up operations in that area.

"The intention is to carry out high profile patrols around the Grange estate tackling the issues that have been affecting the quality of life of the residents."

The operation started on Thursday with the presence of mobile speed trailers which was then followed up with the use of speed cameras on Friday.

Insp Roberts said: "Motorists who exceed the speed limits in that area can expect to receive a heavy fine and penalty points on their licence.

"Residents will notice an increase in the number of stop checks on cars and motorbikes and I would ask that they cooperate with the officers who are trying to reduce the traffic problems in that area."

The issue of speeding motorists was raised by Mike Kennedy, chairman of the Grange Residents' Association, last week and he is now calling for further action to be taken.

He said: "This is of some concern for residents and has been for a number of years.

"It is more the fear of accidents rather than those which have transpired.

"I would still suggest a sign or signs warning residents and drivers who do not know the imminent danger.

"It is pleasing that the police have started to do something about this but we must all work together to carry this forward."
