Saints sign Meli and release Albert

ST Helens have announced the signing of 25 year-old New Zealand international Francis Meli on a three year contract commencing next season.

Meli already has 14 Kiwi caps and was the New Zealand Warriors player of the year in 2003.

Saints coach Daniel Anderson stated: "I know Francis well, having already coached him for 3 years. He will complement perfectly the backline which we have for next season."

Meli added: "I've had a great few years at the New Zealand Warriors but need a new challenge. I'm really excited about the new challenge ahead with the Saints and in Super League. They are a great team packed witht alent and I'm itching to be part of it under my old coach Daniel Anderson."

St Helens have also agreed in principle to release Darren Albert from his contract at the end of this season. St Helens Chairman, Eamonn McManus, stated: "Although this is disappointing given that Darren recently signed a contract extension, he has always been very open and honest that he wishes to finish his career inn the NRL. The opportunity with Cronulla came out of the blue and is a great offer for him which may not repeat itself. He was willing to stay with the Saints, but we have agreed to his request given the particular personal circumstances.

Albert added: "This was a very difficult request for me to make as I have had a great four years with the Saints and was looking forward to a couple more. However the offer from Cronulla may not arise again and I have always wanted to finish my career back home in Australia. I am very thankful to the management of St Helens who have handled this in a very professional and understanding manner. I'm looking forward to finishing my four years with the Saints with a Grand Final win in October."
