CHESHIRE Police have agreed to steward the forthcoming Winnington VJ Day parade after veterans spoke out following their earlier refusal of support.
The Burma Star Association north west regional parade has been marshalled by police officers in previous years but the former soldiers -- all in their 80s - were told their march would not be supervised this year.
But following action from group members, Ch Supt Tim Jackson said a minimum of four officers will now attend the parade on August 14.
Event planning officer PC Jerry Allcock said: "We are under constant demand to police processions and this means taking officers from other duties.
"The situation with the Winnington parade was treated no differently to every request we receive. We sent the association a letter suggesting alternatives to police presence, such as hosting the parade off-road in a car park, or even by walking on the pavement, but it was not meant to cause offence."
But PC Allcock said changing times have taken their toll on tradition. He added: "The roads aren't as tranquil as in the past and parades create danger. Only uniformed police officers can close roads which is why we ask organisers if it is absolutely necessary for ceremonial events to be held there."
But Burma Star Association Secretary George Rymer said the group was delighted at the police turnaround. He added: "When the police said they would not marshal, I sent a letter in from former Home Secretary David Blunkett saying police should co-operate with VJ parades.
"It's terrific news that they will now help us. We were prepared to marshal ourselves but we wouldn't have been able to close the roads so it wouldn't have been safe."
George said preparations are now complete. He added: "The parade starts from Winnington Park Rec at 2pm before arriving at St Luke's Church for a 2.30pm service.
"There'll be refreshments and a singer and organist at the club afterwards."
