School's out for summer

PUPILS at Middlewich High School jumped for joy as they said farewell to their teachers on the last day of term.

And there will be more reason to celebrate when they return in September because Cheshire County Council has approved a planning application to erect a specialist IT unit at the school, in King Edward Street.

In February staff and pupils at the school learned they had been successful in a bid for specialist status in maths, science and information communication technology (ICT) and the plans to upgrade the school buildings were submitted to planning officers last month.

Middlewich Town Council has since received a letter from the county council to say the application has been granted approval with conditions and at its meeting last week councillors welcomed the news.

As part of its specialist schools status the mixed comprehensive school for 11 to 16-year-olds will see £400,000 poured into the core subjects of maths, science and ICT over the next four years and will get the chance to bid for a further £400,000 in 2009.
